Thrilling league draw between Cailungo and Juvenes Dogana
Two sides in search of points and consistency opened the seventh round of the league: Cailungo and Juvenes Dogana faced off in the only evening fixture of the day, staged at the “Federico Crescentini” in Fiorentino. One win each and seven points in total, combining both teams’ returns, is a meagre haul from the first fifth of the campaign which – for Francesco Benedetti and Michele Camillini – can hardly be called satisfactory or in line with their target of reaching the postseason.
The game is enjoyable and in no way affected by the artificial surface made slick by the first rain of the weekend. The game plans laid out by the two coaches are immediately clear: Juvenes Dogana in charge of proceedings, Cailungo set up to break and counter. Thus, the first chances for the Serravalle club arrive at the end of patient passing moves, but without managing to hit Tordella’s target in the opening half-hour. This is also due to Dormi’s left-footed effort sailing over, wasting a fine move down the flank by Gianluca Benedetti. The Rossoverdi’s reply – tonight in all black – stems from the interplay between strikers Bua and Cecconi, leading to the latter’s cross for Costa’s run into the box. The winger, helped by Pedini’s failure to intervene, unleashes a right-footed strike from the heart of the area – crucially deflected behind for a corner by Pedini himself, atoning for his earlier mistake. From that very corner, Iuzzolino cushions the ball with his right hand before Valli Casadei lashes it unstoppably – but also uselessly – past Colonna. Having survived that scare, Juvenes Dogana carve out their best chance so far: a short corner routine allows Dormi to cross from the edge of the penalty area. After a deflection, the ball drops to Lisi, who swings his right boot – drawing a superb save from Tordella, decisive with his feet in his first stop of the night. It is the last notable incident of a first half played at a good tempo, with one clear chance apiece.
After the break, the number of opportunities to affect the scoreline increases exponentially, producing a goal each and some outstanding saves from the goalkeepers – among the best players on the pitch. On 50 minutes, Giacomo Borghini clips the ball into the six-yard box, where a pinball in front of Tordella ends with Quaranta’s deflection – kept out by a monumental save from his team-mate. Six minutes later, it is Lisi who flirts with the opener for Juvenes Dogana: his precise right-footed effort shaves the post to Tordella’s right, with the keeper beaten this time. After an excellent interception by Quaranta on a through ball for Gianluca Benedetti, it is Colonna’s turn to book his place in the match highlights: seeing is believing when he shows lightning reflexes to deny Cecconi’s close-range header, with the striker already wheeling away to celebrate. His joy is merely delayed by a few seconds, because from that corner the former Murata forward rises at the near post to nod the ball on for Colagiovanni – ruthless as he tucks in at the back stick, played onside by Gianluca Benedetti. The Rossoverde lead, however, lasts barely an amen: less than two minutes of real time, about 25 seconds of effective play. Just enough for Camillini to make two substitutions: one of them brings on Aprea who, pouncing on a terrible error by Zonzini, leaves Tordella rooted with a curling right-footed shot from the edge of the box to restore parity on 61 minutes. There is still more to come, such as Amadori’s solo run through four opponents – ending with a left-footed effort dragged wide – or Costa’s attempt from the edge, too tame to beat Colonna after excellent hold-up play by Bua. In a pulsating finale, with play swinging from one end to the other as both sides chase all three points, the nets remain untouched: Cailungo and Juvenes Dogana share the spoils at the end of a magnificent contest. A result that pleases no one, yet at least confirms the good form and fitness of the squads led by Francesco Benedetti and Michele Camillini.
