Championship: key clashes in the playoff race
The top four in the BKN301 Championship will all be on the pitch at the same time as the competition resumes this weekend with Matchday 20. Virtus, La Fiorita, Cosmos and Tre Penne – strictly in order of league position – will take centre stage in the 15:00 kick-offs on Saturday 10 February. The long-distance duel between the neroverdi leaders and the Gialloblu will therefore continue, with just two points separating them.
Bizzotto’s side travel to Montecchio to face a Fiorentino still hurting from last weekend’s clash with Cosmos. Virtus, for their part, have got back into their stride and come into this one on the back of four straight wins (notably, the Acquaviva club are the only team yet to draw a game). The Rossoblu – currently eighth, one point behind Folgore – will have Salemme and Gimenez back (both suspended last time out) but will be without the banned Diop.
It is also an intriguing fixture for La Fiorita, who take on Murata. The Bianconeri have been inconsistent and are coming off a narrow defeat to San Giovanni. They will also be without forward Giacomo Cecconi, suspended for one match. For the Gialloblu, Amati and Greco return. Kick-off is at 15:00 in Domagnano.
Cosmos will also be targeting yet another victory when they face Cailungo in Acquaviva. The Gialloverdi are chasing a twelfth consecutive win as they look to stay firmly in the title race. Berardi’s men are seven points off top spot, but still have to meet both Virtus (Cosmos won the reverse fixture 3-0) and La Fiorita (1-1 in the match played on 21 October). It is a difficult spell for Bobo Sarti’s Cailungo. Although they ended their goal drought in their last match against Academy, the Rossoverdi remain on a poor run and have not won since 29 October.
Completing the quartet at the top are Tre Penne. The reigning champions will face San Giovanni at the “Crescentini” in Fiorentino in a match that promises to be fascinating. Ceci’s side – fourth, two points behind Cosmos – come into it buoyed by three straight wins and the best attack in the league (53 goals, with Imre Badalassi leading the scoring charts on 19). The Rossoneri, however, are fresh from a narrow victory over Murata, crucial in keeping them in a comfortable position in the playoff zone.
Wrapping up Saturday’s programme will be San Marino Academy and Libertas, who kick off at 18:15 in Acquaviva. Cecchetti’s youngsters are in fine form after back-to-back wins over Pennarossa and Cailungo; Sperindio’s side, by contrast, come into this on the back of four straight defeats. In effect it will be a direct head‑to‑head for a shot at the playoff places: as things stand, both sit outside the post-season, with the Granata (on 15 points) one point clear of the Titani. The target is eleventh place, currently shared by Domagnano and Faetano on 17 points. The Giallorossi and Gialloblu will meet on Sunday at 15:00 in Domagnano in one of three Sunday fixtures on Matchday 20. At present Faetano have the upper hand on head-to-head results – thanks to the thrilling 4-3 win in the first half of the season – but Paolo Rossi’s men are coming off a vital victory over Folgore, sealed in the 90th minute by Daniele Babboni.
Despite that defeat, Lasagni’s side remain in seventh place – which guarantees direct access to the playoff – but Sunday’s opponents will be anything but straightforward. Tre Fiori visit Montecchio on the back of a 3-0 win over Pennarossa last time out. De Falco’s Gialloblu are comfortable in fifth position but eager to climb further and improve their seeding for the post-season. Also kicking off at 15:00, but on the artificial pitch in Fiorentino, are Juvenes-Dogana and Pennarossa. After stringing together five consecutive wins, Amati’s side have suffered back-to-back defeats to Virtus and La Fiorita. In the table, however, they are just one point behind Folgore in seventh. The situation is more complicated for Dolci’s Pennarossa, still bottom of the standings and searching for their first win of the season.
