Futsal: series of head-to-head clashes behind trailblazing Fiorentino
The sixth matchday of the 2023-24 Campionato Sammarinese futsal season serves up some fascinating clashes at every level of a table led by Fiorentino, who sit top with a perfect record. In fact, the fixture that will see the reigning champions open the programme on the Fiorentino synthetic pitch is, on paper, the one with the most predictable outcome. Not because of any shortcomings on the part of Cosmos, their next opponents, who have collected three points from five outings, but rather due to the volume and quality of play produced by Michelotti’s side – as underlined in last week’s direct clash with Folgore.
The Giallorossoneri are in for a far from straightforward match in the shape of the derby with Juvenes-Dogana. The Serravalle side are coming off their first defeat of the tournament, suffered at the hands of highly-rated Murata (4-2). Levani’s men are eager to respond and must show they can rise to the occasion even when the odds are stacked against them. Having passed their first seasonal tests against Cailungo, Tre Penne and San Giovanni with flying colours, captain Cecchetti and his team-mates now face the moment of truth against one of the declared contenders for the title (Dogana, 21:45).
No less intriguing is the simultaneous fixture to be played in Fiorentino straight after the game involving the club of the host Castello. In the other match, Tre Fiori will in fact take on Virtus: fifth and sixth respectively in a table where, right behind the pacesetters, six teams are separated by just three points. They are expected to produce a memorable contest with an outcome in the balance right up to the end of the sixty minutes of play – stoppages excluded. Virtually level (Tre Fiori are three points back with a game in hand), both sides have everything needed to play the role of outsiders in what is shaping up to be a long and evenly matched season – at least in the race for post-season spots.
Those roles also seem to fit La Fiorita and Murata. The Montegiardino club have recently always proved competitive, only to find the final hurdle too high to clear when it really mattered. Murata, on the other hand, are chasing the opposite objective: to shake off seasons that have fallen short of the club’s prestigious futsal tradition. The Bianconeri, with Cellarosi confirmed at the helm but a heavily revamped and competitive squad at his disposal this year, intend to send a clear message to their rivals. In this respect, the direct showdown between two of the four sides currently sharing second place can only be regarded as a reliable testing ground and one of the main attractions of the upcoming round of fixtures.
The remaining teams in action tomorrow evening are fighting for different, but no less important, objectives. In Domagnano proceedings open with Cailungo-Tre Penne, a match in which the Rossoverdi could draw level with their opponents and with Domagnano themselves – who are scheduled for their rest day. The same goal is on the agenda for Faetano and Pennarossa, level on three points and set to face Libertas and San Giovanni – the bottom two. For Casadei’s Biancorossi and Gualtieri’s Gialloblù the priority is to rediscover a winning feeling that has eluded them for two and three league rounds respectively. For the sides representing the Castello of Borgo Maggiore, meanwhile, the urgent task is to get off the mark in the standings, where they still sit on zero points.
