Thirty years since the end of the world: FSGC and Erreà celebrate the record goal against England
FSGC and Erreà celebrate the record goal against England with a special polo shirt
Exactly thirty years have passed since that Wednesday, 17 November 1993, when at Bologna’s "Renato Dall'Ara" stadium the San Marino National Team faced England on an evening which – far beyond the most optimistic expectations of the time – would become historic and iconic in every corner of the globe, among football fans and non-fans alike.
It took the Titans just 8.3 seconds under Giorgio Leoni to break the deadlock in their favour, with a goal that thrust San Marino into the global media spotlight, and not only in the sports press. It also entered the record books, as Davide Gualtieri’s strike remained for the next 23 years the fastest ever goal scored in FIFA World Cup qualifying. An honour and a burden which, for the man himself, has meant dozens of interview requests every year from the most diverse international media outlets over the last three decades.
Federazione Sammarinese Giuoco Calcio and Erreà, the technical partner of the San Marino National Team, have therefore decided to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of that milestone in the history of the Biancazzurri. A magical night, despite the final 7-1 scoreline in favour of the Three Lions, which allowed many people to discover the team of the Titan, a side that appeared on the world’s maps for many thanks to those few seconds – just under ten – from kick-off of a seemingly impossible match.
From 10:00 this morning it is possible to purchase in pre-sale on the FSGC Shop portal the commemorative polo shirt, bearing on the chest the slogan "GOAL DA 8.3CORD – 30 anni" and complete with a patch marking its time frame (17 November 1993 – 2023). In short, a true memorabilia item to be displayed with pride, available in the two iconic colours of the San Marino National Team: white and light blue, in sizes from XS to XXXL.
At this stage the polo shirt can be purchased at a launch price of €17.00. The reason behind this recurring number is simple: it appears both in the date being celebrated (17 November) and in the final 1-7 scoreline which, while representing a heavy defeat, fixed in everyone’s mind that crucial "1" which is being remembered.
