Champions League: Tre Penne defeated in Iceland, Barretta goal not enough
No way through for Tre Penne, involved in the 2023-24 UEFA Champions League Preliminary Round. The San Marino champions were beaten by Icelandic side Breidablik, hosts of the mini-tournament that will conclude on Friday with the clash between Thorvaldsson’s team and Montenegro’s Budućnost Podgorica.
The final scoreline was harsh, a 7-1 victory for Breidablik. Gunnlaugsson broke the deadlock on 6 minutes, followed midway through the first half by Hlynsson’s strike. Tre Penne, however, were still in the game and managed to get back into it with Barretta’s goal to make it 2-1. Hopes of a comeback for the club from Città were then dealt a blow in added time, when Faroese forward Klæmint Olsen netted the hosts’ third.
It was a heavy setback, and the Icelanders made it count in the final quarter of the match. With the score stuck at 3-1 until the midway point of the second half, it was in the last 20 minutes that Breidablik really broke the deadlock. First through Sigurdason and Einarsson, then with goals either side of the 90th minute from Gunnlaugsson and Hlynsson, both completing personal braces.
With this 7-1 result, Tre Penne’s Champions League journey comes to an end, but Stefano Ceci’s side will have another chance in the Europa Conference League, where in the Second Qualifying Round they will face the winners of the two-legged tie between Olimpija Ljubljana and Valmiera. The first leg is scheduled at the San Marino Stadium in the last week of July.
