Championship: Virtus extend their lead but La Fiorita keep pace
The early fixtures of the 23rd matchday of the Campionato Sammarinese delivered drama and decisive results in both the title race and the battle for the play-off places. Domagnano claimed a crucial win, Virtus strengthened their hold on top spot, while La Fiorita ran out emphatic 3-0 winners over Cosmos to stay in touch. The draw between Fiorentino and Tre Penne kept both sides’ hopes of direct play-off qualification alive.
Domagnano edged it 1-0 thanks to a well-taken free-kick from Parma late in the first half, his strike clearing the wall and nestling in the bottom-right corner. It was an intense contest with chances at both ends. Cailungo tried to hit back straight away, creating several dangerous situations after the break but without finding the net. With half an hour to go, a controversial incident saw Rossi’s side score following a long kick from the goalkeeper and a suspected handball, but the referee ruled the goal out. In stoppage time the Rossoverdi had one last opportunity, only to fire wide. Bastos was sent off in the 94th minute for a second bookable offence.
Virtus recorded an important 2-0 victory over Folgore in a match played at a high tempo. Tortori broke the deadlock on 20 minutes with a shot from outside the box that beat the goalkeeper and gave his side a real lift. Shortly before half-time, De Lucia doubled the advantage with a precise finish from the left, effectively putting the game to bed. The Giallorossoneri tried to react after the restart, forcing a series of set-piece situations and building some good attacking moves, but Passaniti was alert and dealt with every attempt on his goal. With this win, Bizzotto’s team tighten their grip on top spot, maintaining a five-point cushion over second-placed La Fiorita, who move on to 55 points thanks to today’s success. A gap that brings the league leaders ever closer to their seasonal target.
The third of the 3 p.m. kick-offs ended in a goalless draw between Fiorentino and Tre Penne, with both teams carving out several chances to break the deadlock. The Biancoazzurri started with great intensity, almost scoring within seconds and hitting the crossbar ten minutes into the game. Tarini’s side replied with a series of attacking moves, but their efforts were all thwarted by Migani. The second half maintained a high tempo, with constant end-to-end play. The draw keeps Tre Penne in seventh place, the last position granting direct access to the play-offs. Cosmos’ defeat, who now sit two points back on 36, prevents them from overtaking.
Tre Fiori secured three valuable points with a 2-0 win over Murata. The match was decided in the first half, with two goals setting the course of the contest. Prandelli opened the scoring by firing home after the goalkeeper’s save. Bernardi made it 2-0 shortly afterwards with a powerful long-range effort that found the bottom corner. The Bianconeri tried to respond with a few chances in the second half but failed to make them count. Notable was a shot against the post by the Gialloblù twenty minutes from time which could have killed the game off completely. Camillini’s men had a goal disallowed for offside soon after the restart and kept pressing until the end, but were unable to convert their opportunities.
In the 6 p.m. kick-off, La Fiorita ran out convincing 3-0 winners over Cosmos in a match dominated from first whistle to last by Ceci’s side. The game opened with a chance for Olcese within seconds of kick-off. Just after the half-hour mark, the opener arrived with a strike from outside the box by the centre-forward, who then doubled the lead a few minutes later from the penalty spot to make it 2-0. After the break, the Montegiardino outfit continued to control possession, with Zaccaria adding a third on 51 minutes. Despite the difficulties caused by a slippery, rain-soaked pitch, La Fiorita managed the game expertly, snuffing out every Gialloverdi attempt. The final whistle confirmed the 3-0 scoreline and, with this victory, La Fiorita move up to 55 points, keeping alive their hopes of challenging for top spot.
In light of today’s results, the league is becoming increasingly enthralling. Virtus continue to lead the table with authority, but La Fiorita, buoyed by their emphatic win over Cosmos, remain firmly in the hunt for first place. The likes of Tre Penne and Domagnano are also refusing to let up, making this a fiercely contested campaign full of twists and turns. As the season progresses, every point will be crucial in the race to achieve each club’s objectives.
