Coppa Titano: thrilling finale in Montecchio, Cosmos go through on penalties

A nail-biting finale unfolded last night in Montecchio between Cosmos and San Giovanni, the only tie still to be completed among the second legs of the Coppa Titano Round of 16. After last Wednesday’s postponement due to fog, the match resumed from the 55th minute yesterday evening, with Andy Selva’s and Marco Tognacci’s sides battling it out to the very end. Normal time finished 2-0 to San Giovanni, sending the contest into extra time. In the 94th minute the deadlock in the tie was finally broken: a superb right-foot strike from Monceri, set up by Mossolini, temporarily sent Cosmos through.

San Giovanni, however, held firm and, virtually with the last kick of the game, produced the decisive move: Calp drove into the box, the yellow-green defence tried to close him down but a series of ricochets led to a handball by Mularoni. Referee Righi pointed to the spot. Eric D’Angeli stepped up and made no mistake, taking the match straight to a penalty shoot-out. There Cosmos were faultless, with all four of Selva’s chosen takers scoring, while Semprini saved the attempts from Vandi and Bastianelli, sending the Gialloverdi into the quarter-finals – where they will face Tre Fiori.
