Futsal: Fiorentino aiming to reopen the title race, Folgore to close it out
From one end of the long weekend to the other, the San Marino futsal championship shows no sign of slowing down: after the exertions of Matchday 18, played on Friday, six clubs are ready to return to the court tomorrow for Round 19. This concerns Group A only, where the play-off spots have already been assigned and teams are therefore competing for secondary objectives, such as the best possible finish between fourth and sixth place and, above all, top spot. The latter is currently held by Folgore, who are highly unlikely to relinquish it given their perfect record and the fact that their closest chasers, Fiorentino, will then have to observe a rest round. In the meantime, however, Michelotti’s men – who recently secured second place – intend to make the very most of all their remaining chances, also to send out a strong message to their rivals in view of the post season. Tomorrow brings a direct head-to-head. Fiorentino lost the reverse fixture (4-1) and have since put together ten consecutive wins. A streak that would impress almost anyone, but not the yellow-and-red powerhouse, who have racked up fifteen wins – in other words, every match played – and are planning the knockout blow. Indeed, a sixteenth victory would make Spada’s side mathematically certain of finishing top, while Fiorentino, if they were to win by at least four goals, would draw level but in fact move ahead of their direct rivals on the head-to-head, although Folgore would still have a game in hand to restore their advantage. In short, Folgore are very close to making official the dominance they have shown all season, including in the cup, while behind them Domagnano see no realistic prospect of moving either up or down the table and will therefore treat the remaining fixtures, starting with tomorrow’s against San Giovanni, as a long run-up to arrive in the best possible shape for the post season. The Rossoneri, beaten by Juvenes-Dogana in their most recent outing, are playing to rediscover their best form but also to defend fourth place, which is under serious threat from Libertas, who will rest tomorrow, and also from Juvenes-Dogana, recently back in contention for that specific position. With five points still to make up, Zonzini’s side are for now focused on securing a second consecutive victory: tomorrow they will cross swords with Cailungo, bottom of the group and with no further – mathematically speaking – chance of improving their league position.
