La Fiorita-Tre Fiori: Supercup to kick off new season on 30 August
San Marino’s football clubs returned to the pitch from last Monday, stepping up preparations for the new domestic season. With the exception of Tre Fiori, La Fiorita and Tre Penne – who have barely paused due to their commitments in the Champions League and Conference League – the other twelve sides have been back tasting match action over the course of this week.
The curtain-raiser for the 2022-23 San Marino football season will be the Supercup, featuring reigning league champions La Fiorita and the most recent winners of the Coppa Titano, Tre Fiori. The match is scheduled for Tuesday 30 August at the Acquaviva Stadium (kick-off at 20:45). The two yellow-and-blue outfits have dominated recent campaigns, claiming ten of the twelve trophies awarded from 2018 to today. The only exceptions are Tre Penne and Folgore, San Marino champions in 2019 and 2021 respectively. Otherwise, the honours board has been painted largely in yellow and blue, and it will be updated in just over three weeks with the awarding of the first trophy of the year: what remains to be seen is whether the Supercup will be heading to Fiorentino or to Montegiardino.
Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the San Marino season for the remaining thirteen teams will begin the very next weekend, with the opening round of league fixtures. It is worth recalling that from this year the title race will be settled entirely over the 30-match regular season. The side finishing top of the table will be crowned champions of San Marino and will enter the preliminary round of the next Champions League, while the play-off phase will be crucial in determining which team – on the strength of its league performance – will qualify for the First Qualifying Round of the Europa Conference League. The other place, as always, will go to the winners of the Coppa Titano.
