League: first midweek round of the year coming up
Barely time to digest the weekend’s results and the Campionato Sammarinese is already set to resume within 72 hours. Just around the corner is the first midweek round of the calendar year, which will put Virtus up against the Folgore hurdle. The reigning champions come into it off the draw with La Fiorita, a result that could see them slip three points behind Tre Fiori should the latter prevail in the rescheduled match with Cosmos (yet to be set, like the whole of Matchday 15, at the time postponed because of snow). The fixture list would appear to be smiling on Girolomoni’s side, who on Wednesday take on San Giovanni in Montecchio in what looks on paper a simpler task than the one facing Virtus (who play simultaneously in Acquaviva). At the “Federico Crescentini” in Fiorentino, San Marino Academy will want to back up the progress shown against Libertas, which led to their first win of the season. Della Balda and his team-mates, however, must contend with one of the deepest and most competitive squads around: only yesterday La Fiorita showed they can go toe to toe with Virtus. Also on the late fixture list is the Cosmos-Juvenes Dogana derby: the Gialloverdi have yet to make their first appearance of the year, with both of their scheduled games postponed. On the other hand, Boldrini’s men avoided defeat at the hands of San Giovanni thanks to former player Aprea’s goal and are keen to keep their cousins behind them. Both involved in the race for seventh place, they will also have to contend with Fiorentino and Pennarossa.
Costantini’s and Ricchiuti’s teams will face off tomorrow already in Fiorentino. The mood in the two dressing rooms could not be more different: the Rossoblù are coming off a heavy defeat to Tre Penne, while Pennarossa snatched a thrilling late point against Domagnano – the league’s fourth-placed side. At the same time, at the Ezio Conti in Dogana, it will be Murata versus Cailungo: both are struggling for results and are chasing points to avoid finishing at the bottom. As well as on Titani.tv, the match will be broadcast live on FIFA+. For both sides, thinking about climbing to eleventh place – the last spot that grants a foothold in the post-season – looks complicated: the Rossoverdi are currently nine points adrift, Murata as many as sixteen. Recently the Bianconeri were overtaken by Faetano, who survived a penalty against before striking late on: tomorrow in Montecchio Sperindio’s boys face the Tre Penne test. The club from Città boasts the best recent form among the leading pack and have no intention of easing off. Libertas-Domagnano rounds off the midweek programme: the Granata are going through a period of clear difficulty that prompted sweeping changes at the opening of the winter transfer window. For their part, Domagnano will have to make up for the suspensions of Gozzi and Santi – both sent off in Saturday’s controversial finale, where Amati’s side recorded a third straight draw after those against La Fiorita and San Giovanni.
