League: showdown between the two leaders lights up Matchday 10
With more than half the season still to play, it would be premature to label it a title decider. However, it is undeniable that the clash between Virtus and Tre Fiori is the focal point of an entire weekend devoted to Matchday 10 of the Campionato Sammarinese. It could hardly be otherwise: the two sides jointly lead the table on 25 points, are both unbeaten and boast leaders’ numbers in terms of goals scored and conceded. In fact, Tre Fiori can lay claim to the best defence overall, with just three goals conceded, while Virtus are only one goal off both the tightest defence and the two top attacks, those of Folgore and La Fiorita (23). Statistics matter only up to a point: tomorrow in Acquaviva it will be flair, composure and motivation that do the talking. The big match is one of the fixtures scheduled for 15:00 on Saturday. Another will see Juvenes-Dogana and Faetano go head to head – two sides that have not tasted victory for some time and are currently separated by just two points. The Biancorossoazzurri and the Gialloblù will meet in Montecchio, while in Fiorentino we will have the encounter between Domagnano and San Marino Academy. The Wolves are in sparkling form and, after drawing with Tre Penne on the back of three straight wins, are aiming to get back to taking all three points in order to move, at least temporarily, ahead of Folgore, currently third in the single-group table. As for the young Biancoazzurri, the draw with Faetano allowed them to get moving in the table again (something that had not happened since the opening day) and has certainly whetted the appetite of a side that came within a whisker of their first victory of the season, especially in light of the many chances – some of them gilt-edged – created in the second half of that match.
The Matchday 10 programme does not jump straight to Sunday afternoon. First it passes through two fixtures set for 18:15 on Saturday. One of these is a derby: Tre Penne-Murata will also mark the official debut of Giovanni Bonini as head coach of the Biancazzurri, who need to put an end to a lean spell stretching over four games, in which they have recorded one defeat followed by three consecutive draws. Murata’s last win is slightly more recent (three games ago) and repeating that feat would finally allow the Bianconeri to erase the minus sign in their points column. The two “cousins” will play in Montecchio, while the other early-evening fixture will be staged in Acquaviva and will be a private affair between Pennarossa and La Fiorita. Before the international break, the Gialloblù paused their surge with a 2-2 draw against Folgore. Pennarossa also come into this one off a draw (after a win in the previous round) and are highly motivated by the chance to capitalise on the head-to-head between Juvenes-Dogana and Faetano, the sides that – respectively – sit just above them (on goal difference) and just below the team coached by Adrian Ricchiuti.
Turning to Sunday’s late fixtures, Fiorentino and Cailungo will be playing for precious points in the lower reaches of the table. This too – kicking off at 15:00 in Fiorentino – is a direct clash: the Rossoblù, currently two points clear of their opponents, are looking to pull away, while the Rossoverdi are plotting an overtake. What the two sides have in common is that they have each managed only one victory so far, and that came a long time ago. Things are no better for Libertas, who take on (in Montecchio) a Cosmos side enjoying an undeniably positive run – four wins and a draw from their last five – and determined to continue their charge towards the upper reaches of the table. Rounding off the Matchday 10 schedule is the meeting between San Giovanni and Folgore, with the former targeting a statement win to pull away from the relegation mire, and the latter needing to keep Domagnano and Tre Penne at arm’s length as well as to pick up again the golden thread that was interrupted before the break by their nonetheless prestigious draw with La Fiorita.
A reminder that every Matchday 10 fixture will be available live and free to stream on Titani.TV (and Virtus-Tre Fiori also on FIFA+). Here is the full weekend schedule:
