League: Tre Fiori clinch third place
Final matchday of the regular season in the 2021-22 Campionato Sammarinese. Tonight’s three late kick-offs will decide the positions just outside the automatic play-off spots, with Pennarossa and Faetano fighting it out for fifth place. That is the highest Libertas can still aspire to, after their 3-0 win over Folgore last night: a result that allowed the Granata to join Pennarossa on points, although the club from Borgo Maggiore are ahead on head-to-head. At 21:15, Andy Selva’s men face Cosmos in Fiorentino: a draw could be enough for the Biancorossi, provided Faetano fail at the same time to beat Cailungo in Montecchio. Virtus-Murata (Acquaviva, 21:15) is only of statistical interest.
Cardini’s side can still hope to secure the best possible starting position in the Preliminary Round, though they would need not one but two favourable results, both of which would have to come from teams with nothing left to play for in the post-season. If Cosmos were to claim their first win of the year against Pennarossa and Faetano were to be held to a draw by Cailungo, there would be a three-way tie on 44 points from which Libertas would emerge on top. The Granata have the same record as Pennarossa in the head-to-head mini-league including Faetano, but boast a better goal difference across those six matches.
It is hard to imagine both rivals slipping up on the final day, but rotation, load management and suspensions with an eye on the Scudetto play-offs could yet produce some unexpected scenarios. In the meantime, Tre Fiori have dispelled any doubts in the race for third place, getting the win they needed against Juvenes-Dogana. After a goalless first half, during which Juvenes-Dogana were reduced to ten men following the 38th-minute dismissal of Pasquinelli, the Gialloblù struck at the start of the second half through Lentini. The lead was doubled on the hour from the spot by De Falco, before Gjurchinoski rediscovered his scoring touch by sliding home the third eight minutes from time.
The same scoreline at the Ezio Conti in Dogana, where Omar Lepri rotated his squad – and also had to deal with an injury to Garcia after barely a quarter of an hour and to Rosini during the second half. The match was decided around the half-hour mark, when Libertas scored twice inside a minute. A wonderful Giovagnoli free-kick from around 30 metres crashed off the bar and onto Mignani’s back. The ensuing goalmouth scramble went Libertas’ way, with Rosini’s goal-line clearance attempt ricocheting off the leg of Ndao – alert and quick to react. From the restart, Folgore’s passing move broke down on the Francioni-Massari axis: Flores pounced and beat Mignani for the second time in less than sixty seconds. In the second half, it was again Flores who wrapped things up at 3-0 with a quarter of an hour to play.
Domagnano-San Giovanni had no impact on the table and ended in a comprehensive victory for Tognacci’s men – with the coach absent through suspension and replaced on the bench by assistant Dolcini. Satalino opened the scoring as early as the 10th minute. Strologo made it 2-0 from the spot shortly after the quarter-hour mark, before Satalino completed his personal brace midway through the first half. Domagnano offered little resistance and also conceded a fourth in the 68th minute, when a misfortune for Olivieri saw him beat his own goalkeeper Colonna for the fourth time on the night. There were no goals between La Fiorita and Fiorentino, as both Malandri and Lasagni focused on managing their squads ahead of the upcoming post-season clashes. La Fiorita will attempt to defend the Coppa Titano within the next ten days, chasing a place in the 30 April final via a two-legged semi-final against Tre Fiori. Domagnano and Folgore will also be in action on 24 and 27 April with the same target in mind. After these early fixtures from the final league round, only Folgore-Fiorentino is confirmed as a Preliminary Round pairing. The remaining three ties will be determined by tonight’s results involving Pennarossa and Faetano.
