Under-15, two 4-1 scorelines on day two: San Marino fall to Andorra

Andorra claim their second win in as many matches at the Under-15 Development Tournament and remain top of the standings. The closest chasers are now Gibraltar, who bounced back in style after their penalty shoot-out defeat to San Marino, coming from behind to beat Liechtenstein 4-1. Sunday’s decisive clash between Andorra and Gibraltar – currently separated by two points – will decide the overall winners of the tournament. San Marino went into the game on the back of their shoot-out success over Gibraltar and were hoping to build on those positive sensations. Instead, the match immediately became an uphill struggle for the young Titans, caught cold by Montané who, starting from a borderline position on Veiga Sanchez’s through ball, rounded Guerra and calmly slotted into the net. Guerra did brilliantly in the 8th minute to deny Montané again, this time flagged offside after a neat one-two with Veiga Sanchez. Moments later, the scorer of the opener burst down the by-line and whipped in a cross that Jourdain turned into his own net. Midway through the half Montané sparked again: Lebrón Gómez sent him clear in behind and the striker fired a venomous diagonal effort, which crashed against the base of the post with Guerra beaten. Shortly afterwards San Marino sounded a warning with Cupi, who tried his luck from distance, forcing Subiròs Moreno into an excellent diving save. Andorra stayed composed and soon threatened again thanks to a mazy run from Areny Alcobè, capped by a pinpoint cross for Veiga Sanchez, whose effort from inside the box had those in attendance thinking it was in: but the ball had hit the side-netting. There was no such illusion, however, when Dominguez followed up to score after a stunning save by Guerra from the ever-dangerous Montané: Andorra 3-0 up. San Marino nevertheless looked to finish the half on the front foot. On 42 minutes they created their best chance of the game, with Gimeno Fornareva clearing off the line from a point-blank Maiani header. Andorra replied in kind just before the interval: Veiga Sanchez burst away down the left and delivered a low ball on a plate for Dominguez, who wasted his team-mate’s gift by firing wide.

San Marino were given an early scare at the start of the second half. Da Costa Oliveira got a touch to a fairly tame effort from Lebrón Gómez and almost wrong-footed Guerra. It was an absolute sitter, instead, for Da Costa Oliveira on the hour mark, when the Andorran forward made the most of Montané’s work to find himself one-on-one with Guerra, only to blaze over with the goal at his mercy. Having weathered that storm, San Marino grew into the game and pulled one back on 68 minutes through Valentini, who lost his marker on a set-piece routine (taken by Jourdain), saw his first attempt saved but reacted quickest to bury the rebound. Andorra responded at once and immediately restored their three-goal cushion: Guerra misjudged a long-range strike from Areny Alcobè and the ball found the back of the net. Di Spirito’s players poured all their pride into the closing stages, at least trying to reduce the arrears. A long-range effort from Sensoli was their final attempt (held by the Andorran goalkeeper) to adjust the scoreline. The final whistle sounded soon after, confirming Andorra’s second win from two and San Marino’s first defeat. San Marino will now face Liechtenstein on Sunday (Dogana, 10:00) as they look to finish the tournament in second place. Much will also depend on the result of Andorra v Gibraltar: in their 4-1 win over Liechtenstein, Gibraltar’s goals came from a Moreno Ruiz brace (the first from the penalty spot), Ferro and Castrey, after Kessler had briefly raised hopes for Roman Spirig’s side by scoring in the 7th minute to give them an early lead.
