Coppa Titano: first legs of the quarter-finals tomorrow
The Coppa Titano is now down to just eight teams. Alongside the seven winners from the Round of 16, the holders – namely La Fiorita – enter the competition at the quarter-final stage. The Gialloblù will face Juvenes-Dogana tomorrow evening in Domagnano, where Ceci’s men will start as favourites. Although the two sides have yet to meet in an official match, their form so far this season speaks for itself: the Montegiardino club come into the tie unbeaten after ten league rounds, the same span in which Juvenes-Dogana have not yet managed a single win. Achille Fabbri’s men, however, have shown a special feeling with the Coppa Titano, having knocked out Fiorentino without conceding a goal. The Serravalle club will need two perfect games if they are to trouble the reigning champions. Stefano Ceci will be without Affonso through injury, while Fabbri must manage four players walking a disciplinary tightrope – including Davide Merli.
At the same time in Montecchio, it will be the turn of Faetano v Virtus. Ricchiuti’s side came through the Pennarossa test in the previous round with some anxious moments and will now be asked to measure themselves against the current league leaders, finalists in the last two editions and holders of two Super Cups. The Neroverdi are the team everyone has to beat, and for Faetano they represent a mountain to climb. On top of that, Bizzotto has been able to ration the efforts of his key men – Tortori and Rinaldi above all – thanks to the emphatic win in the last league round, effectively wrapped up by half-time. One certain , suspended for accumulated bookings in the two-legged tie with Cosmos.
The ties scheduled on the artificial pitches of Acquaviva and Dogana look decidedly more finely balanced. At the Ezio Conti, Folgore and Tre Penne will go head to head. Having met in the league no more than three days ago, they confirmed very similar levels – as shown by last Saturday’s 1-1 draw. It is hard to imagine a clash that could deliver definitive verdicts as early as tomorrow night, at the end of the first leg. Rather, it would not be surprising if on 11 December – when the second legs are scheduled – extra time, or even penalties, were required. Manuel Miori will only be available again for that date, having been suspended by the sporting judge after the Round of 16 tie with Murata.
A delayed verdict is also possible in the two-legged tie between San Giovanni and Tre Fiori, whose first act will take place in just over twenty-four hours at the Acquaviva Stadium. With three wins from their last four outings, plus a narrow defeat to La Fiorita, the Rossoneri are confirming the good things they showed last season – underlining their excellent form with victory over Cosmos. Tre Fiori have won every match played in November, climbing the table to the current sixth place, only four points off top spot. On paper, the quarter-final between San Giovanni and Tre Fiori promises to be a fiercely contested encounter, one that could be decided by a single incident. Tognacci’s men will need to be particularly careful in their management of yellow cards: no fewer than eight of their players are one booking away from suspension, compared to three in the opposing camp.
