Development Tournament: Under-16s finish top with 7 points after penalty shoot-out finale against Gibraltar
The final day of the Malta 2026 Development Tournament, whose winner – the San Marino Under-16 national team – had already been confirmed after the first two matches, was decided from the penalty spot. Both Malta-Andorra (12-11 on penalties) and San Marino-Gibraltar (4-5 on penalties) ended level after the ninety minutes. Beaten in the shoot-out, the young Biancazzurri still collect a point – as stipulated by the tournament regulations – to finish top of the group with seven points, rounding off a memorable campaign in Malta that sees the hosts take the runners-up spot (5 points), ahead of Andorra (3) and Gibraltar (2).
After a slow start, San Marino and Gibraltar gradually raised the tempo of their play: in the opening phase, Frisoni stood out as he searched for Achilli in the middle of the area after a fine burst down the flank. His team-mate was inches away from making the decisive contact. Gibraltar’s reply came through Lucas Hill de Oliveira, whose effort from the edge of the box was dealt with by the alert Della Valle. Ryan Casciaro’s boys took the lead in the 18th minute, taking advantage of some hesitation in the Sammarinese back line: it was Lucas Hill de Oliveira himself who pounced on a loose ball in the penalty area, scoring a goal born of pure sharpness and opportunism. Buoyed by that breakthrough, Gibraltar went in search of their first win in the group after two defeats: in the 25th minute Villa Lopes went on a solo run and found himself one-on-one with Della Valle – who was crucial in preventing the second goal.
In the second half San Marino rediscovered their aggression, immediately creating a scoring chance through Mattei. From a free-kick won by the number 2 himself came a neat move with Cola that forced a sharp reaction from Becerra Lopez – decisive with a save with his foot. At the other end Gibraltar continued to spurn opportunities to make it 2-0: Gomez, just on the pitch, rushed his shot from the edge of the area and fired wide. As the minutes ticked by, Bonesso’s side increased their presence in the opposition half, favouring combinations down the flanks to then pick out runs into the box. That is how, in the 81st minute, Montali’s headed lay-off became the assist for Baggiarini, who burst into the penalty area and found the net, making it 1-1. The scoreline remained unchanged to the end of normal time, leaving the final verdict to the penalty shoot-out: from eleven metres Gibraltar proved more accurate and effective, securing an overall 5-4 victory.
