Tomorrow San Marino-Slovenia, Costantini: "Focus and counter-attacks. The dream is to score"
It is a San Marino National Team that returns to the familiar surroundings of the San Marino Stadium after last Thursday’s trip to Copenhagen in front of almost 40,000 at Parken. On that occasion the hosts Denmark ran out 4-0 winners, but coach Fabrizio Costantini is optimistic ahead of tomorrow night’s clash (kick-off at 20:45) against Slovenia, valid for matchday six of the EURO 2024 qualifiers. The Titano head coach – speaking in the customary pre-match press conference – started his analysis precisely from the big game against the Scandinavians: “We build on the positives from the last match. We are facing a very strong national team that is fighting for qualification. In the first leg in Slovenia we played well, conceding the only two goals of the night in fairly fortuitous fashion. We aim to put in a similar performance. We will need to be compact in defence and then break forward. The dream would be to score.”
Looking at the numbers in a very tightly contested Group H (Finland top on 12 points, followed by Denmark and Slovenia on 10), it is clear that the Titans are defending increasingly well – 17 goals conceded in 5 games – and are letting in far fewer than in previous European and World Cup qualifying campaigns. But the San Marino coach is not fully satisfied: “We can always do better. We must remain focused at all times, knowing that it costs us a lot of energy. We have worked a lot on the defensive side and in the future we will also need to be bolder, especially in matches where we can really have our say, such as the next Nations League, which we are targeting in a big way.”
Sitting alongside the national team coach at the Stadium press conference was Simone Franciosi, coming off an excellent defensive performance last Thursday at Parken in Copenhagen: “It is an honour to represent the country on such important stages as in the last match. I always want to give my all when I wear this shirt. In every game we must stay compact and focused, above all to make up for our shortcomings when we face top-level professionals.”
The Group H fixture between the Titans and Matjaz Kek’s Slovenia will kick off at 20:45 at the San Marino Stadium in Serravalle and you can follow the live radio stream on Titani.tv.
