Euro U19: Switzerland claim the final three points of the group
The Under-19 National Team wrapped up their European qualifying campaign by taking on Switzerland, who immediately tried to impose their tempo on the match without, however, creating anything particularly dangerous in the opening stages. The first real chance for the Swiss came on 13 minutes, when Parente fired over after being picked out in the box by Greco. It was, in any case, a sort of prelude to the opener, which arrived a few minutes later after Schreiber won the ball back and played it centrally for Derbaci, who made no mistake. Romano was equally clinical from the penalty spot after a handball by Domeniconi in the area on 26 minutes: Hoel was sent the wrong way and Switzerland moved 2-0 up. The San Marino goalkeeper did not let himself be surprised, though, by Greco’s dangerous effort after a fine one-two with Boteli: no 3-0, just a corner for Rizzo’s side. The latter still managed to extend their lead a few minutes later, when a neat exchange between Derbaci and Xhemalija allowed the former to finish comfortably from close range, taking his personal tally in the match to two. The 4-0 came hot on its heels: Greco crossed into the area for Parente, whose header sent the ball beyond Hoel. San Marino responded promptly: an exchange between Cervellini and Domeniconi allowed Valentini to deliver an excellent cross from the right; Wälti’s intervention was far from perfect and Meloni was presented with a great chance to pull one back, but he was unable to angle his shot sufficiently. At the restart, Pasolini came on to replace Luca Bugli. Compared to the first half, San Marino were able to get to grips with Switzerland much better, and a long balanced phase followed before the game sparked back into life. On 63 minutes, Capicchioni tried his luck from outside the box but missed the target by a whisker. The San Marino forward was then withdrawn along with Domeniconi to make way for Mularoni and Marinucci. In the closing stages, Meloni received his second yellow card of the game and San Marino were reduced to ten men, as in the opening match against Czechia. Despite this, Cancelli’s side held their shape well and did not allow Switzerland any further chances up to the end of the three minutes of added time.
