Futsal Week: Belgium and Saudi Arabia get the better of San Marino

©FutsalWeek | Mattia Protti Double defeat for the San Marino national futsal team, engaged over the weekend in Poreč (Croatia) in the now traditional Futsal Week. The experience was shared with ASA referee Luca Tura, appointed as second referee for both of San Marino’s matches – with the opportunity today to work alongside one of the best officials in the world, Croatia’s Nikola Jelic. A last-minute withdrawal by Iraq forced the organisers to revise the schedule at the eleventh hour: San Marino’s debut, originally set for Friday against the Iraqis, was pushed back to yesterday against Belgium. The Red Devils ran out 8-2 winners, despite leading only 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Rahou and Adnane. For the Titano side, chances fell to Mattioli and Zafferani. The restart was a shock, with Belgium striking twice in quick succession through captain Ahmed Sababti and again Rahou. The game increased in intensity and tempo and Franciosi had the chance to make it 4-1, but the San Marino captain was unable to find the target with the goalkeeper beaten. Belgium made the most of the momentum and struck again through El Fakiri and Beeckman. Mattioli tried his luck from a free-kick without success, while the opponents kept their foot on the pedal, adding further goals by Dillien and Rahou (hat-trick). San Marino at least deserved the consolation of a goal, and in the end they got two: De Angelis pounced on a loose ball after a shot by Busignani, who then, from a 10-metre penalty, netted the last goal of the match to round off the scoring at 8-2. ©FutsalWeek | Luca Tura Back on court this morning against Saudi Arabia, the Titano side showed the fatigue from the Belgium game, which in several respects this one resembled. Not least in the half-time scoreline, with the Saudis 2-0 up courtesy of an own goal by Ercolani and a finish just seconds before the buzzer from Maghribi. In the second half Al-Otaibi made it 3-0 before Danilo Busignani scored for the second game running, ice-cool in front of goal after being sent clear by a textbook through ball from Zafferani on the counter. In the closing stages Al-Asmari and again Al-Otaibi found the net for a final 5-1 scoreline, in which Mattioli also entered the match report – sent off shortly before the Saudis’ last goal, scored with the extra man. There was personal satisfaction for Mattia Protti, with the San Marino goalkeeper named best keeper of the tournament. The trophy went to Belgium, who beat Saudi Arabia 6-2.
