League: Cosmos and the Virtus hoodoo, derby in Fiorentino

There is no doubt at all that Virtus v Cosmos is the most intriguing fixture of the weekend. The top-of-the-table clash will be played tomorrow in Montecchio (3:00 p.m.), where Berardi’s and Bizzotto’s sides will meet for the third time this season. Their previous encounters in the BKN301 Titano Cup took Virtus through to the quarter-finals, knocking out the Gialloverdi – overhauled in the summer to challenge for the title, as they are indeed doing in the league. Forced to sit out the midweek cup action, they will go into this delicate showdown with one game fewer in their legs than Virtus, who will be playing their third match in seven days. Also in action tomorrow are La Fiorita, who will be hoping for a still-unbeaten Virtus in the simultaneous big match in Montecchio – a scenario that, should they win, would guarantee them top spot ahead of their rest day. Reigning champions La Fiorita visit Faetano in Fiorentino (3:00 p.m.) chasing a fourth straight victory, after narrow wins over Fiorentino, Libertas and Pennarossa. Caution is advised, though, against a Faetano side inspired by the red‑hot Mema, the league’s joint-top scorer alongside Ben Kacem and Prandelli (7). The Albanian, also starring for San Marino’s NAT, comes into this one on the back of three consecutive braces against San Giovanni, Pennarossa and Juvenes-Dogana, after a match against Fiorentino in which he scored once and provided two assists. All this has come in his last five outings, which also include a 2-0 win over Murata. Girolomoni’s team are in good shape: after a start to forget, they have found form and climbed to sixth place in the table. Libertas and Domagnano are still searching for a clear identity. The technical shake-up in Borgo Maggiore, which saw Sperindio replace Cardini in the dugout, appears to have had the desired effect. After an undeserved league defeat to Tre Penne, the Granata drew the first leg of their quarter-final with La Fiorita. The Domagnano test (tomorrow, 3:00 p.m. in Acquaviva) is seen as the opportunity to get back to winning ways for the oldest club on the Titano. The same mindset applies to Amadori’s men, who are coming off back-to-back 2-1 defeats to Cosmos and Tre Fiori. Murata and Cailungo, on the other hand, are desperate to move off second from bottom. Level on 6 points, they could find themselves sharing last place – in the event of a draw tomorrow in Domagnano (3:00 p.m.) and a subsequent Fiorentino win in Sunday’s derby. Murata come into the game on five straight league defeats, although in midweek BKN301 Titano Cup action they drew 1-1 with Folgore – who are idle this weekend. Cailungo, meanwhile, have been able to focus solely on this match as they look to return to winning ways and halt a run of two defeats, following the five points collected against Domagnano, Pennarossa and Libertas. All eyes will be on the Castello di Fiorentino derby in the Sunday programme. At 3:00 p.m., naturally at the Stadio Federico Crescentini, Selva’s and Malandri’s sides will face off with ambitions of a different scale, but united by the need to claim three points. For Tre Fiori, it would mean stretching their winning streak: the only team to have won each of the last five league games, the Gialloblù also edged Virtus in the first leg of the BKN301 Titano Cup quarter-finals. The table has them two points behind leaders La Fiorita and level with Cosmos, who still have to serve their rest day unlike the clubs from Fiorentino and Montegiardino. Colagiovanni and his team-mates will instead complete a brutal run that has seen them face the top four in the table in consecutive matches. Despite excellent performances against La Fiorita (1-2, with regrets) and Tre Penne (1-1), their last outing ended in a heavy defeat to Cosmos (0-4). Tre Penne will also be in action on Sunday (Montecchio, 3:00 p.m.), fresh from their first defeat of the season – inflicted by Juvenes-Dogana in the cup. Ceci’s side remain unbeaten in the league, where they trail La Fiorita by three points and the Cosmos-Tre Fiori duo by one. Up against them is a tough, well‑organised opponent in San Giovanni, a side that have shown they do not really do half measures: no draws in the league, with four wins and five defeats. Tognacci’s Rossoneri currently occupy seventh place and will return to the pitch three weeks after their last outing, due to a rest day and the break for international duty. The programme concludes with Juvenes-Dogana v Pennarossa (Sunday in Montecchio, 3:00 p.m.). Both sides are coming off inconsistent displays that have left them in mid-table, but they have the tools to aim for a regular season finish just below the play-off line. Recently, Juvenes-Dogana have shown they can compete with teams built to win trophies (see the 3-1 cup victory over Tre Penne), only to slip up in games where the Serravalle club were favourites on paper. In short, the blessing and curse of a lethal transition game that risks jamming when space in the opposition half becomes much tighter. On the other side, Pennarossa are struggling to string results together, and Massimo Gori’s debut in the dugout did not immediately reverse the trend. Despite boasting the third-best attack and a defence broadly in line with the sides just below the play-off zone, Pennarossa have managed only three wins, and have taken just a single point from their last five matches.
