National Team, Operation Liechtenstein Gets Under Way

San Marino are back on the international stage: Roberto Cevoli’s Biancazzurri will make their UEFA Nations League debut tomorrow against Liechtenstein. Kick-off at the San Marino Stadium is scheduled for 20:45, while five days later the Titani will travel to Chișinău to face Moldova in an official friendly. Unfortunately, Filippo Berardi is not part of the squad, having picked up an injury in yesterday evening’s training session in Acquaviva. This was also a topic in the pre-match press conference: "I never like to talk about absentees, although the issue of injuries – including for the San Marino National Team – is becoming a recurring one," commented San Marino head coach Roberto Cevoli. "And here they have a greater impact than in other footballing environments, because we do not have such a large pool of players that we can easily replace an unavailable footballer. That said, I am more than happy with, and confident in, the players we have with us; in particular, the younger ones are eager and raring to show what they can do – and that gives me real optimism. Expectations are high in any case. From the draw in Paris we had this match in mind and all the work we have done so far has been geared towards tomorrow’s game. As always, it will be a difficult match, but against a team that – in my opinion – could be within our reach. Clearly, it will be up to the pitch to tell us whether that is indeed the case." On the same wavelength, Alessandro Golinucci added: "This is one of those games where both teams can feel they have a chance to win and will do everything they can to achieve it. We are playing at home and we must turn our stadium into an extra weapon. Our aim is to bring great competitive aggression onto the pitch and make the most of the qualities of our many young players, who can really hurt Liechtenstein. The first rule – in this respect – is to avoid defensive mistakes. Our most recent matches against them have been decided by the smallest of margins, so individual episodes become even more important. First and foremost, we want to show we are compact, because up front we have players who can cause problems for their back line." These are the players provisionally called up by Roberto Cevoli, before he leads the official training session at 20:30, after which he will make the final decision on the 23 who will be listed on tomorrow’s official team sheet.
