Statement from the Federal Council

The San Marino Football Federation (FSGC) firmly condemns any form of abuse, all the more so when perpetrated against vulnerable individuals such as minors. In this respect, since 2019 the FSGC has adhered to the Child Safeguarding programmes promoted by UEFA and FIFA, having published its own internal policy and implemented within its Licensing System several mechanisms for the protection of minors, as well as mandatory training courses for staff authorised to work as coaches in youth sectors. As an additional tool, the FSGC has recently created a safe area on its official website where reports of improper behaviour or actual abuse can be submitted – including anonymously.

The San Marino Football Federation only became aware yesterday, through the media, of the case relating to Steven Raul James. In this regard, it should be specified that the undersigned organisation had not received notice of the relevant criminal proceedings in any other way or from any other source, whether formal or informal.

It should be noted that every coach or trainer registered with the FSGC with that specific qualification is required to provide a self-declaration certifying the absence of criminal measures against them that have resulted in custodial sentences of more than six months. This condition does not apply to Mr James, who has always and only been registered as a football or futsal player.

In light of what has emerged, and with the protection of the young male and female players who practise football in San Marino at heart, the Federal Council of the San Marino Football Federation will shortly discuss the necessary measures to be taken against the aforementioned person – including the possible revocation of the UEFA C Licence obtained at the time.
