League: Tre Fiori make it nine, the Scudetto returns to yellow and blue after six years

The conclusion of the regular season left only two possible outcomes: Tre Fiori’s triumph, with the ninth Scudetto in their history, or a level finish with Virtus and a consequent play-off between the two sides to decide the title – in accordance with Art. 53.2 of the FSGC Regulations. For the latter scenario to happen, holders Virtus had to beat Libertas while Tre Fiori needed to lose to Pennarossa.

Bizzotto’s side made things clear inside ten minutes, racing into a two-goal lead. De Santis’ driven cross-shot was clumsily diverted by Rossi past Manuel Nigro, and on 9 minutes Zenoni’s burst of pace ended with an unstoppable angled finish. In the meantime, Tre Fiori had firmly taken control of proceedings – even though a draw would also have been enough to crown Girolomoni’s side champions of San Marino. Midway through the half, the score in Acquaviva was still 0-0, thanks above all to Socciarelli’s goal-line clearance – denying Benedettini after he latched onto a ball spilled by Pizzolante. In Dogana, after a few missed chances, Virtus went 3-0 up direct from a free-kick: Ivan Buonocunto scored, and in the 43rd minute he put Piscitella clean through on Nigro for the neroverdi’s fourth.

At the start of the second half the news again came quickly from Dogana, where Virtus moved 5-0 up through the Montanari-Golinucci combination. The captain of the San Marino national team beat Nigro with a perfect lob from the edge of the area. By contrast, Tre Fiori were denied by the woodwork protecting Pizzolante when Prandelli’s header crashed against it on 48 minutes. Twenty minutes later Pizzolante showed both the best and worst of his repertoire: first a spectacular save to turn away Bernardi’s thunderbolt, then a misjudged outing that allowed Prandelli to move the Scudetto closer to Tre Fiori’s trophy cabinet. To spice up the finale, there was the penalty won and converted by Domini a quarter of an hour from time. Meanwhile, in Dogana Virtus ran riot with Zenoni, Scappini and a Lombardi brace – stretching the scoreline to a final 9-0. It was a huge winning margin for the title holders, who nonetheless had to surrender the crown to Tre Fiori – for whom today’s draw was more than enough to finish top of the pile and once again celebrate a Scudetto that had been missing for six years. The Gialloblù came out on top at the end of a remarkable duel, in which Tre Penne also seemed capable of joining the race for a few weeks. The title chase was settled over the last six matchdays, when the three sides were separated by just as many points, with Virtus and Tre Fiori level at the summit and heading for a head-to-head. In the final reckoning, that victory for the Fiorentino club in the direct clash opened up a gap that was never bridged and delivered their ninth national title, the first for coach Girolomoni and captain Prandelli – among the standout figures in a season that will end with the Coppa Titano final for Tre Fiori, who will represent Sammarinese football in the next UEFA Champions League.

Besides the title race, access to the Preliminary Round was also left to be decided on the final day of the regular season. The fates of Pennarossa and San Giovanni, level on points, were clearly intertwined: goals by Badalassi and Pieri, assisted by Turchetta and Nigretti, put Tre Penne 2-0 up at half-time. That situation meant Pennarossa would be able to qualify even with a draw against Tre Fiori. This because by the 51st minute the club from Città had effectively wrapped up the three points through Fabbri: the midfielder burst through the middle to beat Casadei from a corner situation. At that stage, only a Pennarossa defeat would send San Giovanni into the postseason – as the Rossoneri could boast a better head-to-head record against the Chiesanuova club. That scenario came into being in the 68th minute, when Prandelli broke the deadlock in Acquaviva. In reality, San Giovanni – after Badalassi’s opener – were only virtually in the Preliminary Round for seven minutes. That was how long it took Pennarossa to equalise from the spot. Then, in the 79th minute in Montecchio, Bastianelli left his side a man down. The disappointment was palpable for the Borgo Maggiore club, never really in the game today and missing out on the play-offs by a single point.

League positions were instead frozen for Juvenes Dogana and Murata: the Bianconeri were unable to erase the minus sign from their tally, ending a campaign that began with a nine-point deduction on -2. Boldrini’s team in fact took the victory: they went ahead on 21 minutes through Aprea, who finished into an empty net after being picked out by Nicola Sartini following a dreadful mix-up between Bracconi and Bello. A set-piece led to the second goal, scored by captain Mazzavillani. On the hour mark the gap widened further thanks to Aprea, who completed his hat-trick before leaving the pitch. It was a solo run through two opponents for the third goal, while the 4-0 arrived at the end of a prolonged passing move. Before the end, there was room on the scoresheet also for Nicola Sartini, Labas and Gjyla: the latter two enabling Murata to reduce the deficit to a 5-2 final scoreline.

A similar situation applied to Cosmos and Faetano, unable to improve their league position and comfortably clear of the nearest side behind them. After Monceri had struck the post early on, Cosmos took the lead on 43 minutes from an Islamaj penalty – awarded for a challenge between Zonzini and Andretta. At the start of the second half came the second goal: the Gialloverdi worked a short corner quickly, involving Andretta. The forward laid the ball off to Monceri, whose diagonal effort – too wide to hit the target – was providentially turned into the net by Ceccaroli, registered as the 2-0 that was then confirmed at the final whistle.
